Dr. Shou-chien Shih is a distinguished art historian who has long dedicated himself to studying Chinese painting history and East Asian art history. Art and Archaeology at Princeton University. 1984, he joined the Institute of History and Philology at Academia Sinica. He has also served as Professor and Director of the Graduate Institute of Art History at National Taiwan University and Deputy Director and Director of the National Palace Museum. In 2012, he was elected as a member of Academia Sinica (29th).
His research approaches Chinese painting history from a cultural-historical perspective, focusing on the relationship between stylistic changes and cultural context, regional artistic developments, Sino-Japanese artistic exchange, and the interaction and transformation of the concepts of “雅” and “俗.” His work offers thought-provoking insights into the theories and methodologies of Chinese art history. In recent years, he has led several international projects at Academia Sinica, such as 移動的桃花源 and 東亞文化意象之形塑, promoting a broader East Asian perspective that encompasses China, Japan, and Korea, while exploring the historical interactions between artworks and their audiences.
Dr. Shih’s academic achievements are highly acclaimed. He has twice received the Outstanding Research Award and the Special Outstanding Talent Award from the NSTC. His book 《從風格到畫意——反思中國繪畫史》received the 35th Golden Tripod Award from the Government Information Office.
